Lay a large rug under the conversation area, use a rug that extends beyond the furniture grouping to outline the “living room.” Angle the sofa, tables and chairs to encourage guest interaction and mimic the layout of a regular living room. Set the dining table and chairs on another rug, nearer to the kitchen, or enclose the dining area between a large hutch on one side and a kitchen island or low bank of kitchen cabinets on the other. Place the bed in a corner closed off by curtains or hidden by a bank of bookshelves, an armoire or a screen. Set up the lighting. Tall loft windows and typical window walls flood the loft with light by day and are dramatic at night with sweeping velvet ceiling-to-floor drapes that pool on the loft floor.
Then, decorating with reclaimed or bespoke wood shutters on some or all of the windows for privacy. Hang chandeliers and pendant lamps from exposed pipes. Experiment with spotlights for artwork or area lighting. Install good work lights in the kitchen and bathroom; add task lighting to the desk and a reading lamp by the bed.
