Decorating The Top Of Your Kitchen Cabinets
The tops of kitchen cabinets offer bonus space when it comes to storage and decor, especially with a couple of feet free between cabinet tops and the ceiling. Here are several ideas to decorating the top of your kitchen cabinets. Add decorative recessed lights over the cabinets to brighten the kitchen. Lights, aside from being practical, make a dark kitchen more inviting and easier to work in. Even if you can’t recess the lights, add wall sconces that match your kitchen’s style. Don’t feel you have to restrict your designs to traditional lamps; strings of holiday lights or tube lights will add sparkle and interest to your kitchen at night. If you don’t have a wall plug but the kitchen gets a lot of light during the day, try a few solar garden lights on the cupboards. And many cookie, biscuit and even popcorn tins make interesting kitchen decorations. Select a mixture of tins whose colors complement each other and don’t clash with your kitchen. Stand them up on the top of the cabinets or simply flatten the bottom side slightly with a small rubber mallet so the tins stay right-side up. Since these tins are free, you can change them out when you get tired of them or want a change of scenery.
If your best serving dishes are chipped or crazed with age but you just aren’t ready to part with them, display them on top of your cabinets. Don’t feel restricted to just your worn stoneware; visit a few art fairs in the summer and pick up some of the lovely pottery made only for display. Hang pitchers, spoon-holders, old cups and other kitchen related items with an open handle from hooks mounted in the ceiling. Set other items on top of the cupboards in eye-pleasing combinations.
