Installing Stairway Molding In Your House
If you want to installing stairway molding by yourself, then here are several ways that you can do. First of all, place a scrap piece of stairway molding on the flat stair landing. Trace a line along the top of the molding with a pencil so that it extends at least 3 inches past where the flat portion of the landing ends. Place the scrap piece of molding on the angled portion of the stair runner. The top of the stairway molding should intersect the line you drew in the previous step. Trace a new line along the top of the molding. Draw a line from the intersection points of the two lines down to where the flat stair landing meets the angled portion of the stair runner. Place a scrap piece of molding on the flat stair landing. Bring the edge up to where the pencil lines intersect. Mark the location of where the flat stair landing and the angled portion of the stair runner meet on the bottom of the molding. Draw a straight line between these two points. This will be your cut line.
Repeat Step 4 to find the other angle, using another piece of scrap molding. Cut each piece of stairway molding along the line in your miter saw. Put them into place and ensure the angle is correct. Place each scrap piece of molding on to a regular length piece of molding and transfer the angles. Cut the new molding on the scribed lines. Position the molding into place along the stairs and nail into each stud with your nail gun. Use a stud finder to find the location of the studs behind the drywall.
