Maintenance Outdoor Cast Stone Fountains
Outdoor fountains made of cast stone, which is essentially man-made limestone, are most stylish and with a modicum of attention, will last for decades. Because outdoor fountains made of stone are heavy and not able to be moved easily, extra care is needed to keep them looking nice through all seasons. Winterizing your outdoor fountain is recommended in cold climates because water can become trapped in the porous areas. This water will then freeze and cause the fountain to crack. To winterize an outdoor fountain, drain all of the water before temperatures reach freezing levels. If the pump is removable, take it out of the fountain and clean it, then store it in a dry area. To help prevent water from collecting in the basin or tiers of cast stone fountains, line the fountain with blankets or rags to absorb moisture.
Next, cover your fountains with a designated cover or tarp. Fountain covers are generally waterproof, but if one cannot be found, one or two large tarps can be used. Make sure that the fountain is completely covered. Bungee cords can be used to help secure loose ends, and if necessary, use closed jugs of water to weigh down the tarp.
