Measure For Interior Doors
Interior doors are any doors that does not provide access to the outside of a home or building, like a closet door, bedroom door, bathroom door, or office door. Whether you are measuring for the framing of interior doors or looking to replace your existing doors with one the same size, the process is pretty simple. Measure the width and height and add two inches to both measurements. This will allow room for the door frame and shims. For example, if you measure the door’s width at 30 inches, you would space the studs 32 inches apart. This is the process when working on the interior building frame, and measuring to fit a future door. Sketch a plan of the room on grid paper if you are changing an existing door. Try to draw it to a relative scale. Indicate the direction of the door swing. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the door. Measure the height at both the hinge side and the knob side (usually 80 inches). Get a careful measurement, rounding only to the nearest 1/8 inch.
Measure the location of the hinges, always starting with the top of the doors and measuring down to the top and bottom of each hinge. Check to see if each top corner is square; use a framing square for this. If not, make notes on your plan and report it to your contractor or door manufacturer.
