Measuring Your Glass Shower Door
One way to beautify your bathroom is have a glass shower door. Whether you want a standard or custom, accurate measurements are critical to prevent leaks and to ensure the right look. Measure the desired height of the glass shower door on each side of the opening to the nearest 1/16 inch. If the tiles in your shower don’t extend all the way to the ceiling, use the top of the tiles as the line for the top of the shower door. Otherwise, just make sure the top of the door is above the level of the shower head. Compare the two height measurements. Save the larger one. If you are planning to install a custom frameless door, save both measurements and make a note of which one belongs with which side. Measure the width of the opening at the top and bottom to the nearest 1/16 inch.
Hold a long level against each side of the opening if you are measuring for a custom glass shower door. Determine which wall it is with the level. Measure the opening a third time, halfway up. Record all three measurements, how far up the wall the middle one is and which wall is out of plumb. Extend the tape measure to the width of the door if you are planning to install a swinging model. Hold one end of the tape measure where you plan to put the hinges, and hold the other end of the tape measure out horizontally to indicate the width of the door. Swing the tape measure out into the bathroom as if you were opening the door. Make sure the door has room to open freely.
